Perth photographer, Jackson Eatonhas very interesting exhibition coming up soon that you might be interested in taking a gander at. For his exhibition, Single, Eaton will spend one night in a gallery space with a female stranger, documenting the nights activities with polaroids. The photos will them be on display the following day for public viewing. The catch is, he will be using a special type of film that slowly fades to black over a 24 hour period until the picture is no longer visible. The magical day is August 31 from 8 pm to 8 am at theFree Range Gallery, Perth. Pretty cool.
These little critters are just the kind of pals you would like to have by your side on an adventure through a deep dark forest. Nana Sakatahas been working on a series of ink-dot illustrations featuring an array of imaginary and not-so-imaginary creatures, and we're smitten. She is also taking part in a group show at Global GalleryinSydney this September, so if her talent is rocking your boat, keep your ears pricked for details.
Wanting a vintage fix? Check out Miishka and her keen eye for vintage clothing and styling. We are pretty fond of this shoot in particular, a big thanks to Michelle, who was kind enough to send us a big box of dress-up fun too!
We all love a good roadtrip, so you can image how thrilled we were to get a few copies of The Bourgeois Bicycle Caravan (great name by the way) in the post a few weeks ago. Mates, James, James and George embarked on a rambling journey by bike across the western seaboard of France. Armed with cameras, surfboards and Russian beat poetry, the boys conquered the wild and emerged with a very fine little newsprint journal that is for sale over here. Nice one boys.
If you love photography and find yourself a little broke (like all of us), there's a pretty cool competition going on where you can win a Nikon DSLR camera pack worth $5000. All you have to do is take a pic of your hometown. More deets over here. Nice photos from here.
We were lucky enough to have a chat with Ross Hope from Brissie band Disco Nap earlier this week. First off, let's clear one thing up – don't let the name fool you. Disco Nap is no strobe-light, dirty-rave, sweaty-singlet sort of band. It's more poetic, soft, thought-provoking and gut-wrenchingly honest. They came on the scene in 2009 when they won the JJJ Unearthed competition and scored a slot at Sounds of Spring in Brisbane. Although the band played pretty early on the day, they were very well received and made their mark on the music scene. One bonus of playing the early time slot, Ross laughs, is that there are far less people to bear witness if you are to screw up.
A year on and the band is set to release their debut album Running Red Lights this Friday before setting off on a national tour with shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Ross is psyched. He told us that playing live to an audience has a spontaneity and energy that cannot be matched, and always comes with a few welcome surprises. Lyrically, Disco Nap is deep and dark and brutally honest, but the blow is softened with the help of sweet sounding hooks and a little bit of drunk trumpet. A fan of Conor Oberst, The Cure and Weezer, Ross Hope stands by the idea that honesty is the best policy when it comes to songwritingand maintains that stand-out albums are always the most lyrically honest. To have a listen, head over to their myspace, Running Red Lights will be released nationally this Friday, that same night, the band kicks off their Aussie tour.
