Rachel Wells cleverly and artistically puts together a puzzle of quirkiness, art and our built environment. Utilising encaustic as her medium (also known as wax for us less crafty folk), Rachel creates geometric compositions of manmade structures, portraying a fanciful take on the buildings that surround us. Now for the last piece of the puzzle. Rose Coloured Glass, the exhibition of Rachel’s landscapes, will run from 27th September to 18th October at The National Grid gallery, 24 Chard Road, Brookvale, Sydney. . |

As you may be well aware, Melbourne Fringe Festival is on the way and this year Zoetrope is along for the ride. In the mood for a bit of a cackle and a hoot? Then hop along to Festival Club – Arts House, North Melbourne Town Hall (corner Queensberry & Errol Streets, North Melbourne). For $5 your mind and body will take a ride on the quirky and slightly bizarre, yet utterly hilarious train of physical theatre production that is Zoetrope. Times and dates scatter from here to there – 26th to 27th September, 2nd to 4th October, 9th to 11th October. Performances will tumble and turn every 20 minutes from 7pm. Bookings can be made online at Melbourne Fringe. (A nice place to spend some play time checking out the entire fringe program.) |

When you hear the words ‘Garage Sale’, you can’t help but think of getting up at 6am, driving from house to house, and rummaging through dusty old bits and pieces, all to find one little gem (if you’re lucky). Well it’s time to get that idea out of your head. This is what we like to call a designer-chic-slash-bargain-extravaganza Garage Sale. Lala Orange will be selling labels such as Another Boy, Bim Kenesis, Leonard St, Ebony Eve, Zuitton, Miyoko, Kornerd, Dime-A-Dozen and lots more. Perth’s William Street Collective will be transformed, garage-style, from today through till Sunday 21st. Head to 214 William Street, Northbridge for le bargains. |

Are you a hoarder? Clean out your wardrobe and take the excess to the op shop only to return with more, in some sort of vicious fashion-buying circle? If this sounds a little too close to home, then you need to rescue those poor little pieces and take them on a trip to The Clothing Exchange. Just bring six garments (or accessories) to 10A Fitzroy Place, Surry Hills for this special Sydney swap titled ‘My Sister’s Designer Wardrobe’. It’s all happening on September 23rd at 6.30pm, and you can book online to secure a place. For $20, you’ll receive a glass of wine (which is sure to make saying good-bye a little easier) and a night of mixing with like-minded hoarders, op shoppers and vintage fanatics, who are all up for the big exchange.

We always thought ‘primavera’ was something to put on your pasta, but at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art it’s an ongoing exhibition program aimed at uncovering some of Australia’s most unique talent – almost like a sneak peek into the future of contemporary art. Primavera 2008 artists include Marcus Canning (WA), Danielle Freakley (VIC), Ariel Hassan (SA), Mark Hilton (VIC), Paul Knight (VIC), Moya McKenna (VIC), Ms & Mr (NSW), Gemma Smith (QLD) and Soda_Jerk (NSW), some of which have graced the pages of a little mag called frankie! The exhibition’s on from 19th September through to the 30th November at the MCA at West Circular Quay. Have a look here for more info.

This Sunday 14th September is the time to immerse yourself in Perth’s finest design, fashion, food, craft and all things that have a touch of art. Perth Upmarket is an opportunity to see real hand-crafted beauty and meet the brilliant creatives behind all those cute little doodads we love and adore. The Perth Town Hall (corner of Barrack and Hat Streets) is where all the action will be from 12-5pm. Ooh, and if you’re pushed for time, can’t make it, or simply just love it and need more, then there will be another market – same time and place – on December 14th. This one might be good for some Chrissy shopping.

Mandy Sutcliffe, the beauty behind belle & boo – who was also featured back in issue 21 – is a naïve, quirky illustrator creating pieces of art that take you back in time. Her dainty touch, subtle palette and storybook-like content leave you in a dreamlike state, reminiscing about the days when your imagination was your reality. Now the fairytale of belle & boo has escaped its homeland of the UK and flown all the way over to Australia, landing in yet another world of magic: the land of Bob. Bob boutique is one of those little treasures, hidden away from the city … in the beautiful town of Bendigo. If you’re able to pop over (or maybe go on a little trek – 17 Williamson Street, Bendigo, Victoria) to Bob before September 30th you will find 15 of Mandy’s limited edition prints amongst an abundance of other little goodies. But no need to get into a fizzle if you can’t make it by then. Bob has lots of exhibitions on the horizon, and you know this will not be the last time you hear about Mandy Sutcliffe..
