With 25 issues under our belt, what better time is there to celebrate the best bits of frankie so far? In fact, our recent frankie fashion photography showcase in Sydney was so much fun that we’ve decided to take it on tour. Melbourne people have got a few days to recover after Spring Fashion Week, with the showcase of our favourite fashions, shoots and photographers coming to Curtin House on Thursday (11th September). There will be nibbles and drinks and the prettiest pages in print! We’d love to host you all, but the exhibition space is already very cosy. If you want to come along, subscribe to our newsletter and drop us a confirmation line here for a chance to win one of 25 tickets.

Please Do Touch the Display
Written by lara burke
Thursday, 28 August 2008 08:03

In most exhibitions, the irresistible itch to touch and feel the art on display is battled with by our awareness of nearby security personnel and video cameras. Not so for designer Todd Robinson’s Material Thinking. At this exhibition he is asking for you to follow your impulse and touch what you see. “I have often found it comical at exhibitions when I have seen people touch works, thinking no-one is watching them,” says Robinson. Robinson draws on his background in fashion design, using samples from knitting and beading processes, tactile surfaces, luminous effects and drapery to lure you in and prompt you to reach out to the work in front of you. Material Thinking will be held at the DAB LAB Research Gallery from 28 August until 18 September. The Gallery is located on Level 4 courtyard, 702 Harris Street, Ultimo, Sydney.

YAY FOR CLAYMATION
Written by Jo Walker

What is it about claymation that is so huggably nostalgic and wonderful? Could it be all those Gumby and Magic Roundabout flashbacks we’ve been having recently? Anyway, this pretty picture is from Darwin’s 24HR Art, which is currently hosting an exhibition called Big Eye, showcasing the work of four Indigenous animators working in stop-motion, 3D and other moving-stuff-on-telly techniques. It’s on till September 6th, along with lots more NT treasures. Sweet, eh?

From 35mm to large format, pinholes to Hasselblads, plastic toy cameras to antique collectibles, UNSENSORED08 covers many styles and blurs the line between old and new techniques, demonstrating that film photography remains beautiful, simple, accessible and relevant in an era where digital has become the norm. DOES A BEAR EXHIBIT ITSELF IN THE WOODS?
Written by Jo Walker
Thursday, 07 August 2008 07:04

Illustrator and animator (and one-time frankie poster artist) Sean Morris is just about to launch his first-ever solo exhibition, called Bear Bones, this Friday August 8th at the Cracked Gallery at Behind the Monkey, Highgate, Perth. “I’ll be tackling subjects including ‘80s hair metal, woodland creatures and weird topographical forms,” Sean says. “The title of the show comes from the stripped-back approach I’ve taken with the work, which mainly consists of pen drawings on paper and board – and also from the fact that I like bears (and puns) a lot.” Entry is free, Perth people, and it runs till the 24th. So get along and support men with bear habits.

Patrick and Jane are hitting 30, madly in love, madly in lust and occasionally just plain mad. All of their furniture except the couch has been sold to the pawnbroker, they live on a diet of cheap wine, baked beans and whatever they can find in the dumpsters behind their local supermarket, and they take it in turns to hold down a part time job. Inspired by the poetry of Charles Bukowski and the modern Australian city, Bumming With Jane is a funny, loving and beguiling debut play from Tahli Corin. It's about love, poverty and the fleeting joy of choosing to live a free and ragged-arse life. The play runs from August 13 - September 7 at the Downstairs Theatre on Belvoir Street, Surry Hills. For bookings call (02) 9699 3444.

Kids in Sydney can win one of 3 double passes - email your name and address here and pop 'Bum with Jane' in the subject line.
